The Sure Futures programme was a partnership of five local community arts organisations with Norwich City Council, developing arts based activity aimed at improving long-term prospects for young people through involvement in the arts. The project was particularly focussed on improving aspiration, self-esteem and confidence, for young people between the ages of 11 to 16, targeting young people on the edge of marginalisation. The project also offered the Arts Council’s Arts Award Scheme, as a positive way of young people gaining accredited qualifications.
Initially the programme was focused on Catton Grove ward in Norwich, but each year the area of involvement was expanded, firstly to include Mile Cross and subsequently all areas of deprivation in the city. All activities were free to participants. The programme ran from January 2006 to March 2010, with a much reduced activity in the last year.
Our own assessment and feedback clearly demonstrated the value of such a programme. Over 400 young people accessed NORCA’s provision alone, with young people achieving Bronze and Silver Arts Awards.
