Raise Your Voice
Raise your Voice is NORCA’s open singing programme, through which we have run a number of activities and opportunities.
We have brought nationally and internationally renowned facilitators to Norwich for workshops, such as Mahdia Dalne, Gitika Partington, Eugene Skeef, Phil Minton, Michael Harper, Bosco D’Oliveira, Dennis Rollins, Katherine Zesserson, Helen Chadwick and Su Hart.
Professional development is one of our key organisational aims, so we have always sought to include CPD opportunities when bringing experienced artists to Norwich. And getting young people singing is also a key objective, with holiday provision such as 'The Singing Squad gets Wicked' and 'The Singing Squad goes Glee' proving very popular and successful.
We took something of a back seat with programmes such as Vocal Force Norwich and Sing Up bringing great work to the area, seeking to work in partnership with these rather than offer an extensive programme ourselves.
From June 2004 until June 2008 Raise Your Voice offered a successful weekly lunchtime singing session comprising of about twenty adults. This drop in session gave some of the participants who were working in the city, a different way to spend their lunch break. Music from all over the world, was taught by ear in a friendly and relaxed manner by voice tutor, Marcus Patteson, and at least one group was formed as a result, the Balkanettes.
“When faced with a day in the office, I really looked forward to these informal lunchtime singing sessions. It was such a great way to relax and meet other people.” (Participant)
