Raise Your Voice

Singing has always been one of NORCA's core activities. We have run focussed programmes of activity, such as the young person's Singing Squad; run open workshops with nationally and internationally renowned facilitators, such as Mahdia Dalne, Gitika Partington, Eugene Skeef, Phil Minton, Michael Harper, Bosco D'Oliveira, Dennis Rollins and Su Hart; and for three years ran drop in lunchtime singing sessions for adults, as well as starting off the Adult Singing Squad sessions at CNS school.

Professional development is one of our key aims, and wherever possible we have got visiting facilitators to run sessions for voice practitioners. In partnership with Sian Croose (The Voice Project) we set up the East Anglian Singing Network (originally with the support of funding from Youth Music) to support the professional development of singing facilitators and teachers, and school-teachers who use voice in their work. The network sought to combine regular workshops by nationally renowned teachers with more informal sharing of information, networking, discussion and collaboration.

Although we have been part of the upswell in singing activity that has led to a series of national initiatives, particularly seeking to put singing back at the heart of Primary education, we have decided to take a back-seat in the light of recent developments. Programmes such as Vocal Force Norwich and Sing Up are bringing great work to the area and NORCA will seek to work in collaboration with these programmes rather than organising extensive initiatives of our own. We are no longer running regular drop in sessions, but will continue to organise one off workshops and professional development, as opportunity allows.
