Music Makers was a two-year programme funded by Youth Music, aimed at engaging young people in a long-term involvement in making music. At the core of this programme was an exciting, active workshop that encouraged young people to work together to
Music Makers also had an open access element. We ran holiday workshops, which could be anything from a half day to four days. Performances were focussed on Showcase events, including the Greenstock festival (to an audience of around 1,000 people), the Garage’s Summer Showcase and the Norwich Playhouse Showcase.
We had an overwhelming response to the programme, with over 250 young people taking part over the two years. The programme attracted a range of young people, from those who had no previous experience of music at all, to those who maybe played an instrument but had not previously been involved with writing their own material or playing in a group. Over 75% stated that they would like to continue to do music and the results of the evaluation (including comments by teachers and tutors) supported the project impacting on self-confidence and self-esteem.
