Greenstock Festival

NORCA and the Green Grocers present

GreenStock is our Climate Change Festival, our way of drawing attention to the environmental challenges we face and some of the things we can do about it, in a fun day of music, food and activities. It takes place in Heigham Park, Norwich, and this year was its second year (and the first year that NORCA has led the organisation of the festival).

flexing

As well as a programme of music, workshops and talks, which you can find out about below, the aim of the event is to present a range of information and advice on more environmentally sensitive ways of living. Stalls included City Car Club, Cut Your Carbon (EEDA), Norwich Friends of the Earth, the Energy Saving Trust, Ecotricity, Norfolk Solar and Recycle for Norwich. There was organic and locally sourced food provided by Metfield, Adnams' new carbon neutral beer, a great range of local ice creams, vegetarian food from Thoraya's Deli and a bar run by The Green Grocers, selling organic wines and beers.

Camera Obscurer

The festival had a wet start, but with the afternoon brought the sun and about 1,000 people came to enjoy the day. The children's workshops were really well attended and many scary monsters were created from junk with the help of artists from the Sainsbury's centre. Michelle Cheesbrough's kids yoga and the inspiring guys from Skip Hop were particularly popular, at one point they had three kids simultaneously jumping one set of double ropes.

There was a constant queue for Willet and Patteson's amazing Camera Obscura, many people returned during the day for a second or third glimpse of this timeless magical spectacle.

" I think Greenstock is a really positive and informative event. We really enjoyed working here, and people have been very enthusiastic"
(Dominic, Willet and Patteson's amazing Camera Obscurer)

Laila Patteson, age 12

One young participant from the Youth Music funded course, Music Makers, had her debut performance with a song she had written just the week before. "It was terrifying and brilliant, I had two people dancing to the song I had written! I just want to write more songs now."
(Laila Patteson, age 12)

The bands were really well received, especially the Sargasso Trio, who's finale brought an up-beat climax to a very enjoyable day.

We are now back to planning for next year, looking to continue to develop the event. We are keen to:

  • explore how environmental issues can be presented in an effective way.
  • get people from more of Norwich's communities involved.
  • develop an ongoing arts & environment programme that feeds into the festival.

GreenStock08 was funded by Awards for All and Norwich City Council, and sponsored by Toyota Dingles and Anglia Printing Services.
